I recently read an article by Anne E. Cunningham and Keith E. Stanovic entitled "What Reading Does for the Mind" which appeared in the Spring/Summer 1998 Issue of American Educator/American Federation of Teachers which addresses the benefit of avid reading in terms of positive cognitive outcomes. I think it's an important study so I am including links to their pages.
